Ingredients
For the Topping:
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup old fashioned oats
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 cup diced unsalted butter
For the Apples:
2 pounds Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored and cut into thin slices
3 Tablespoons melted butter
2 Tablespoons all-purpose flour
3 Tablespoons water
1 Tablespoon lemon juice
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/2 tsp cinnamon
Pinch of salt
Instructions:
Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
Butter a 8x8 or 9x9 inch baking dish.
Peel, core and slice apples. Place in bowl.
In small bowl, combine 2 Tablespoons melted butter and 2 Tablespoons flour until well blended.
Mix in water, lemon juice and vanilla. Then, mix in 1/4 cup brown sugar, 1/2 tsp cinnamon and pinch of salt.
Pour the butter mixture over the apples and toss to coat evenly. Spread into prepared baking dish.
In another bowl, combine, 1/2 cup flour, oats, 1/2 cup brown sugar, baking powder, 1/4 tsp cinnamon and 1/4 tsp salt. Add diced butter and using your hands, rub the butter into the dry mixture until it resembles small crumbs.
Sprinkle topping over prepared apples in baking dish.
Bake for 35 minutes.
Allow to rest 10 minutes before serving. Top with whipped cream, ice cream, or caramel sauce if desired.
